To learn about the early settlement of the area, you can purchase an audio driving tour that explains how a few years after the American Revolution, in 1788, followers of Jemima Wilkinson, also know as the Public Universal Friend, came to this area from New England and Pennsylvania. When they came to this area, they encountered dense woods inhabited by wild animals. It was only a few years after the native Americans had been forcibly removed by the Continential Army under General John Sullivan. The early settlers worked hard to clear land for farms, a meeting house and school. They built mills along an outlet linking Keuka and Seneca Lakes. Their hard work resulted in the establishment of the first permanent white settlement in the "First American Frontier." (For a full description of the tour click here.)
